33 current South Middle School students, and 1 former South Middle School student attended today's National History Day regional competition at MSSU.

For those that don't know, National HIstory Day is a research-based contest. Students who participate in NHD choose a topic from history and conduct extensive research on that topic. They then present their conclusions and evidence through papers, exhibits, performances, documentaries, or websites. After they create their projectes, they move through a series of contest levels where they are evaluated by professional historians and educators.

17 of those students will be moving on to the state level competition after receiving 1st, 2nd, or 3rd for their projects. Please congratulate the following students on their achievement:

· 1st place- Junior Group Documentary "Ponies, Paperbacks, and Persistent Women: The Pack Horse Library Project" by 8th graders Reid Stanley & Louisa Curchin

· 2nd place- Junior Group Documentary "Apollo 11 and the Step That Changed History" by 7th graders Landon Carter, Cooper England, and Grayson Landis

The state competition will be held on the campus of the University of Missouri on April 22. Students who place 1st or 2nd at state will be able to move on to the national competition which is held in College Park, Maryland in June.

Thank you so much to every teacher who has allowed students to come and put in over-time hours working on their projects over the last couple of months, and just all you do to encourage all of our students every day. If you'd like to continue showing your support, we will be holding a trivia night fundraiser to pay for state and nationals on March 31st in the SMS Commons.
