Good Day SMS Parents & Guardians,

It is hard to believe another school year is already here! We are incredibly excited to welcome our students back to South and get another great year underway. It was great to see all of our students and families at Open House Block Pary! Thank you to everyone that attended!

We have an outstanding group of educators ready to serve our students, and we look forward to partnering with you throughout the year to support your student’s success. We hope you and your family had a wonderful summer and are ready for the year ahead!

For parents and guardians who are new to South Middle School, welcome! One of the primary ways I stay connected with families is through the Weekly Round-Up, which I send out every Sunday. You’ll find important information about upcoming events, school news, helpful links, celebrations, and sometimes even a little fun. Please take a few minutes each week to look it over. And for everyone that is so inclined, hit that “Appreciate” button on the post each week, it’s a simple way for us to know this information is reaching our families.

We are excited to get started and grateful to have you along for the journey. Welcome back, Eagles!

Thank you to our PTO
A huge thank you to our amazing PTO for providing all of the food and treats for our Block Party! This was our best one yet! We are so grateful for all you do to support South Middle School!

Chromebooks & Digital Responsibility
Students will receive their Chromebooks this week. These devices are school property and are provided as tools for learning. Chromebooks should be used for school-related purposes only and should not be used as personal devices for gaming, social media, messaging, or other non-school activities.

Student Chromebook activity is monitored 24/7, and school personnel may be alerted to inappropriate use or potential safety concerns. We will continue talking with students about responsible technology use and the importance of making good choices online.

A few things families can do at home:
  • Encourage students to use their Chromebook in a common area of the home.
  • Establish a routine for charging the Chromebook each night so it is ready for school the next day.
  • Talk with your student about what they are doing online and periodically check their Chromebook use.
  • Help students understand that school expectations for appropriate use continue when using the device at home.
  • Encourage students to take care of the device and keep food and drinks away from it.
We appreciate your partnership in helping students develop healthy and responsible technology habits.

Chromebook Insurance: If you would like to purchase insurance for your student’s Chromebook, please contact the office. Insurance is an easy way to provide protection against accidental damage or loss.

Looking forward to a great first day and a wonderful first week!

Warm Regards,
Mr. Williams
Principal
South Middle School

First Time at Middle School??

I shared these slides during 6th Grade Open House, but I wanted to share them here again as we officially begin the school year.

For any parents or students who may be feeling the nerves that come with starting this new journey, these slides offer some great reminders and talking points to help make the transition to middle school a little easier. I hope you'll take a few minutes to look through them together!

It is also just great reminders for all of our returning 7th & 8th graders!

📚From Our Librarian📚

Ms. Mainardi, our school librarian, still looking for donations so that students can make their own keychains! If you have some trinkets you can part ways with to help her with this project, we would greatly appreciate it.

Chromebook Reminders

Here are a few important reminders:
  • 🔋 Charge nightly – Please remind your student to plug in their Chromebook each evening so it’s fully charged before school.
  • đź’» Bring it daily – Chromebooks should come to school every day, just like any other essential school material.
  • ⚠️ Report issues promptly – If a student experiences a problem with their Chromebook (technical issue, damage, or malfunction), they should let a teacher know immediately. Our building tech specialist will address the issue so learning isn’t disrupted.
  • âś… Use appropriately – Students are expected to use their Chromebooks for learning purposes only. They should follow school guidelines and avoid personalizing, altering, or misusing the device in any way.

Thank you for helping your student build strong habits of responsibility and preparedness, skills that will support both their learning and independence.

STUDENT CHECK-OUT PROTOCOL

As always, safety remains our top priority at SMS, and to help ensure the well-being of every student, anyone signing out a student during the school day must have a valid photo ID. This process will help us keep accurate records and make student check-outs more efficient while maintaining a safe environment for everyone.
